In early November 2023, the Lorrha & Dorrha Historical Society hosted Conchobhar Ó’Súilleabháin alongside his living history group, ‘The Last Prince – O’Sullivan Beare.’ Their presence was a remarkable opportunity for locals and visitors alike to delve into the stories and legacy of this significant historical figure.
The group made their base at Tua campsite located at The Friar’s Tavern in Lorrha. Here, they eagerly engaged with visitors, recounting the formidable journey taken by Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare to Breifne, County Leitrim, following the Battle of Kinsale in 1603. This tale of perseverance captured the attention of many, as they listened intently to the trials and triumphs of the past.
Individual learning experiences were plentiful, as the visitors gained insights into early 17th-century society—including weapons, clothing, food, and the challenges faced during that daunting period. The group unveiled fascinating facts that painted a vivid picture of life in those challenging times.
On Saturday, the re-enactment truly came alive when Conchobhar and his team crossed the River Shannon at Ballymacegan. They retraced the ‘footsteps’ of O’Sullivan Beare and all those who participated in the epic march. Despite the expedition’s historical significance, it was also a symbolic tribute to their struggles and resilience.
The weather on Saturday was far from ideal, with cold and wet conditions dominating the day. However, those present couldn’t help but reflect on the harsher January of 420 years ago, when the actual refugees undertook this daunting journey with incredible bravery. In remembrance, the re-enactment group paid homage to the great Shannon, offering flowers and laying a wreath on the Galway bank, honouring the legacy of those from 1603.
Gratitude was also expressed towards the various individuals who made the event a success. Special thanks go to James Heenan for organizing the day, Denis and Lil Maher for their generous hospitality, Diarmuid O’Crowley for expertly navigating the ferry across the Shannon, Noreen Ryan for managing parking at Ballymacegan, and Mike Hogan for graciously allowing access to his land along the way.
