Lorrha & Dorrha Archaeological & Historical Society

Lorrha & Dorrha Archaeological & Historical Society (LDAHS) was formerly established as Lorrha & Dorrha Historical Society in 2009.

We were delighted to have Noreen Higgins McHughtl present her talk 'Revolutionary Women of Tipperary 1914 - 1923 with reference to Cumann na mBan in Tipperary'. This was a hugely thorough, well researched and informative talk that was enjoyed by all. We would highly recommend Noreen's book 'Revolutionary Women of Tipperary 1914-1923' which is available from The bookworm Thurles bookworm.ie/revolutionary-women-of-tipperary-1914-1923-noreen-higgins-mchugh/
or www.buythebook.ie/shop/noreen-higgins-mchugh/
This was our last talk of the season until our Autumn Series but we are looking forward to our Medieval Conference on July 19th. More updates on that.

Thanks to all who attended our talks this season and we are very grateful to Dan Maher of The Friars Tavern for his hospitality in hosting these talks.

A reminder of our talk 'Revolutionary Women of Tipperary 1914 - 1923 with reference to Cumann na mBan in Tipperary' presented by Dr. Noreen Higgins McHugh.
This Good Friday Night in Lorrha at 8pm.
All welcome. We are delighted to have Dr. Noreen Higgins McHugh speak at our last lecture of our Spring 2025 season on Friday, April 18, at 'The Shed' at The Friar's Tavern, Lorrha (E45 V651). Her talk is entitled 'Revolutionary Women of Tipperary 1914 - 1923 with reference to Cumann na mBan in Tipperary'.

Based on her recently published book, Dr Higgins McHugh will speak on the part played by Tipperary women - particularly through the Cumann na nBan organisation - in the struggle for independence during the period 1914-1923. She has researched the subject in great depth, identifying hitherto unknown Cumman na mBan branches and personnel in places such as Nenagh, Silvermines, Toomevara, Puckaun, and Kilbarron, with some reference to Lorrha. In her beautifully illustrated talk, she will highlight the vital role women played, both locally and nationally, in shaping Ireland’s struggle for independence.
Dr Higgins McHugh has written and spoken extensively on several aspects of Tipperary history and contributed to various historical journals. She is probably best known for her 2002 study, Tipperary’s Tithe War, 1830-1838. She also has a deep interest in genealogy and published A Guide to 'Tracing your Tipperary Ancestors' in 2018.

Dr. Higgins McHugh's book 'Revolutionary Women of Tipperary 1914 - 1923 with an index to Cumann na mBan Pension and Service Medal applicants' will be sold on the night for €35. Recently, her book was awarded the Tipperariana Book of the Year by the Fethard Historical Society.
All are invited to attend the talk on Friday, April 18th, at 8pm.
Admission: €5.
