Patrick “Bonner” Maher, born on October 12, 1989, is a distinguished Irish hurler renowned for his contributions to the Tipperary senior team from 2009 until his retirement in 2024. Maher joined the squad straight from the minor ranks, making his debut during the 2009 championship. However, he became a regular starter the following year. Over his impressive career, he secured three All-Ireland titles in 2010, 2016, and 2019, as well as five Munster winners’ medals spanning from 2009 to 2016. Despite facing setbacks as a runner-up on three occasions (2009, 2011, and 2014), Maher showcased resilience and skill on the field.
Maher’s inter-county debut for Tipperary came against Waterford in the 2009 Waterford Crystal Cup, where he played as left half-forward and netted a goal in the final against Clare. His National Hurling League debut followed quickly, where he played centre-forward and contributed to a victory over Waterford. The beginning of his championship career unfolded on July 3, 2010, when he played against Wexford, scoring two points and exhibiting his potential.
On September 5, 2010, Maher played a pivotal role in Tipperary’s triumph in the All-Ireland finals, leading the team to beat Kilkenny and secure their 26th title, denying Kilkenny their historic five-in-a-row. Shortly thereafter, Maher contributed to Tipperary’s Under-21 victory over Galway, where he scored a goal. His recognition grew as he received numerous accolades, including All-Star nominations and the Munster Senior Hurling Player of the Year award in 2012.
In 2014, Maher’s impactful performances earned him his first All-Star Award after Tipperary reached the All-Ireland Final. Two years later, Maher celebrated his second All-Ireland title when Tipperary defeated Kilkenny once again. His career journey was complex, marked by significant challenges, including a six-month peacekeeping mission in Syria in late 2016.
The latter part of Maher’s career was marred by injuries, starting with a severe knee injury in 2019 that halted his season. Further setbacks occurred in 2021 when an Achilles injury required surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. Ultimately, on October 7, 2024, Maher announced his retirement from inter-county hurling, concluding a remarkable and inspirational career that left a lasting impact on the sport.
